The trial was an excellent demonstration of the success of WCCT’s hybrid model which combines using well known ophthalmology researchers who screened subjects at their offices and scheduled their overnights at the WCCT overnight facilities. In little over 2 months, WCCT enrolled the ophthalmic study which captured PK data, serial interocular readings, and ethnic data (7 of the 31 subjects were Japanese glaucoma patients) in a 2 way crossover design.
WCCT Chief Operating Officer, Jon Rojas, noted that study sponsors are increasingly trying to combine phase 2a efficacy pharmacodynamic or biomarker endpoints, and this study design utilizing patient populations in phase I is become more the norm than the standard healthy volunteer model. WCCT has developed a particularly strong ophthalmic database and network of partnered established ophthalmic clinical researchers, and has been identified by a number of sponsors as the best place to place specialized ophthalmic phase I trials.
